How to Restitch a Bean Bag

Bean bags make excellent, comfortable extra seating in a teenager's room, a college apartment or anywhere you prefer to swap out a regular chair for some funky seating. Because bean bags get used so often, they tear easily. Follow these simple steps, and repair and restitch that bean bag in no time.

  1. First: Gather the materials

To restitch a bean bag, you need heavy duty thread, needle or sewing machine, extra fabric (in case you need to patch an area), extra filling (for any lost filling via a rip or tear) and a funnel. If you use a sewing machine, load the thread onto the bobbin, and set it correctly for a heavier thread. If you choose to sew by hand, thread a larger needle with the heavy duty thread.

  2. Second: Stitch the bag

Before you make a stitch, assess the damage. If you lose filling, gather the extra filling and funnel, and funnel some new filling into the hole. Once you complete this, begin a simple stitch from one end of the tear all the way to the other end. Double stitch to ensure a taught seam, tie a knot, and cut off the excess thread. If you need to patch the area, cut a piece of fabric of a similar color just large enough to cover the hole, and stitch it to the bag. Using the same double stitch as before, check for a tight, taut seam with no breathing room. After that, enjoy your bean bag chair!
